Some nursery pots are recyclable!

Spring planting season means new plants — and, often, a growing stack of empty nursery pots. If you don’t have a plan to reuse them, recycling nursery pots helps keep plastic out of landfills.  Most Oregonians can recycle rigid plastic nursery pots right in their home recycling bin.

The key is knowing which pots are in and which are out. Here are some tips on how to distinguish between them from the Circular Action Alliance, a producer responsibility organization for paper and packaging in Oregon.

  • Recycle nursery pots that are rigid, sturdy and snap back to shape when squeezed.
  • Trash thin, crinkly pots, trays and cell packs that collapse when squeezed.

Before recycling, take a moment to prepare your pots. Knock out all soil and make sure the pot is empty and dry. Dirt left inside can cause problems in the recycling process.

While most of Oregon collects the same list of recyclables, some recycling programs vary; it’s always smart to double-check what’s accepted in your area. Visit RecycleOn.org/Oregon for the most up-to-date guidance.
