The Gresham Japanese garden and the North American Japanese Garden Association will host a Regional Workshop from Thursday through Sunday, September 21–24 at the Gresham Japanese Garden, 219 S. Main Ave., Gresham.
On day one, participants will have the opportunity to tour the healing garden at the Oregon State Penitentiary, the only maximum security prison with a Japanese garden maintained solely by adults in custody. The garden was designed by Hoichi Kurisu, who also was the garden designer for the Anderson Japanese Garden, and the Portland Japanese Garden. He will be there to share his vision for a healing garden inside penitentiary walls. A background check is required to go inside the prison. Participants should register a month ahead to allow time to complete the check.
Day two, the group will enjoy a rare opportunity for members of the public to tour three of the top wholesale nurseries in Multnomah County, including Iseli Nursery, J. Frank Schmidt & Son Co., and Bentwood Tree Farm. Day three will take place at the Gresham Japanese Garden, with many presentations and opportunities to learn more about it. Day four will be a work project at the garden, to include building a paver path and planting the landscape.
