Experience the art of bonsai at a cultural demonstration at the Portland Japanese Garden on December 23 from 1:15–2:15 p.m.
Join Andrew Robson at the Cathy Rudd Cultural Corner in the Jordan Schnitzer Japanese Arts Learning Center. Bonsai, which literally translated is “tree-in-a-tray,” is the art and science of miniature trees.
Robson completed a three-year apprenticeship with Michael Hagedorn, after graduating from Yale University. Robson is the president of the Bonsai Society of Portland, the largest bonsai club in the United States.
Additionally, he serves as a member of the Portland Bonsai Village, and has previously served as a board member of the American Bonsai Society. He regularly lectures and exhibits work at the Portland Japanese Garden. Robson is a host of the Bonsai Wire Podcast and regularly creates new episodes with the other hosts and prominent figures in the bonsai community. Robson lives at his recently constructed garden RAKUYO-en with his golden retriever Bailey, where he teaches and shares the art of deciduous bonsai.
There is no additional charge to attend the presentation. Entry is included with daily admission to the Portland Japanese Garden, 611 S.W. Kingston Ave. Hours are 10 a.m.–3:30 p.m. Wednesday–Monday. Admission is $21.95 for adults, $18.95 for those age 65 and higher, $17.95 for students (with ID), $15.95 for youths age 6-17 and free for children 5 and younger.
