Special 20th anniversary edition of 10-Minute University

Clackamas County Master Gardeners is rolling out a wide range of webinars for this year’s 20th anniversary edition of 10-Minute University. The spring sessions are now open for enrollment and are free. Those marked with an asterisk (*) count for one hour of metro area Master Gardener continuing education credit.

Can’t attend live? Register for the sessions and you will receive a recorded link two days after the class.

January 28, noon–1 p.m.,  Growing Blueberries*

Everyone knows blueberries are delicious parcels of antioxidants, but how many are aware that blueberry plants can live and bear fruit for decades?

The instructor will share best practices developed through years of research by Oregon State University scientists. This class will cover how to select among different varieties, soil preparation, planting techniques and cultural practices, including fertilizing, watering and pruning. We will also discuss pest and disease problems and how to manage them.

February 4, noon–1 p.m.,  Path, Place, Wallpaper*

Explore a new approach to your home landscaping. Learn tips for making outdoor spaces both beautiful and functional. We’ll explain how three elements — path, place, and wallpaper —come together in your home’s landscape. Then, we will guide you through the design process, emphasizing the key factors to consider. This talk will be illustrated with photos of city-scale private gardens.

February 11, noon–1 p.m., Foodscaping*

Many believe vegetables should stay in the backyard, but we disagree. This session introduces a new way to grow vegetables, fruits, ornamental flowers, and shrubs together. You will learn how other gardeners incorporate vegetables and fruits into their landscapes and get ideas for your own foodscape.

February 18, noon–1 p.m.,  Growing Early-Season Vegetables*

Increase your garden’s yield by planting early-season vegetables before warm weather crops like peppers, tomatoes and squash are ready for planting.

This class introduces you to vegetables that grow well in early spring when temperatures are cooler. Instructors will cover soil preparation, planting techniques and seed selection. The main focus will be on adaptations to manage cool air and soil temperatures, garden pests, and potential weather events such as extended rainy periods and early warm spells.

This session highlights the top trees for gardens in the Pacific Northwest. These trees are drought-tolerant, resistant to pests and diseases, hardy in USDA Zone 7 or warmer, and provide year-round beauty. We start with rules for selecting and placing trees. Then, we share some global research on tree resilience and climate effects. Next, we explore potential trees for your garden.

March 25, noon–1 p.m., Dazzling Dahlias*

Dahlias are low-maintenance plants that bloom for extended periods. Their wide variety of colors, sizes, and shapes adds significant visual interest to any garden.

This session covers selecting the right dahlia variety, propagation methods, soil preparation, and planting in containers or gardens. It also covers pruning, watering, and fertilizing to promote healthy plants and abundant blooms, as well as overwintering tubers both in the ground and dug up for storage.
