The month of June is packed with classes and outings with OSU Extension Service that will beef up your gardening and plant knowledge.
Growing Vegetables in the Willamette Valley, 10 a.m.–noon June 13, Washington County Master Gardeners Learning Garden at Jenkins Estate, 8005 S.W. Grabhorn Road, Beaverton. Free. Registration not required. Learn how to use raised beds and containers for the kinds of bountiful harvests you see at the Learning Garden at Jenkins Estates. OSU Extension Master Gardener volunteers will demonstrate how to successfully plan, plant, and harvest vegetables in your home garden. Taught by OSU Extension Master Gardeners Dan McDonald, Jeannine Rychlik, Jennifer Rosenquist and Lorrill Hirshberger.

Reading the Forest: Tree ID, Ecology, and Mindfulness at the Metolius, 9 a.m.–noon June 14, Metolius Preserve, S.W. Warm Springs Road, Sisters. $5 fee. Step into the forest with the Women Owning Woodlands Network and Extension Forester Jenna Deibel for a guided walk at the Metolius Preserve. Explore the basics of tree identification, discuss how forests function as dynamic ecosystems, and practice simple ways to cultivate mindfulness in nature. This workshop will be fully outdoors with walking up to two miles on mostly flat, natural surface trails of variable width. Come discover the diverse ecological and personal benefits forests provide. Attendees will have the opportunity to purchase copies of OSU Extension’s Trees to Know in Oregon and Washington and Shrubs to Know in Pacific Northwest Forests identification guides during registration or in-person. Broccoli in the Bank: Planning Ahead for Fall, 2–3:30 p.m. June 30, Riddle Library, 637 1st Ave., in Riddle. Free. Registration required. Plan ahead for a productive fall garden! In this hands-on class, you’ll explore waterwise gardening strategies and learn how to start brassicas like broccoli, cabbage, kale, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts for fall harvests. Participants will learn when to seed, when to transplant, and how to help cool-season crops succeed through the summer heat.
