Internationally acclaimed gardener Fergus Garrett, from the United Kingdom, will give an in-person presentation on succession gardening — which means adding multilayered, multi-season interest to your garden — Monday, March 10 in Portland.
The ticketed event, hosted by the Hardy Plant Society of Oregon (HPSO), will take place starting at 5 p.m. in the Roosevelt High School auditorium, 6941 N. Central St., Portland.
The event is in-person only and won’t be recorded. Admission is $25 for HPSO members and $35 for non-members. Members may buy an additional ticket at the member price for one guest. Register online (login required). There’s also a link there to join HPSO, if you choose.
Garrett has served as head gardener and chief executive for Great Dixter Garden in Northiam, East Sussex, U.K. since 1993. He learned from charismatic gardener and writer Christopher Lloyd (1921–2006) how to keep the gardens of Great Dixter constantly changing throughout the seasons. He learned to be adventurous in trying out new plants and plant combinations.
“Come and hear Fergus speak about long season gardening,” HPSO stated in a release. “He’ll get you thinking about plant selection, shape, texture, underplanting and interplanting with bulbs and other plants that are happy to share the same space, as well as the use of self sowers and temporary fillers to prolong the seasons.”
“Learn how to use bulbs and woodland plants to provide another layer in perennial and mixed borders. From snowdrops through to alliums, these play a vital role in filling the gaps and giving you color for many months.”
