DESCRIPTION:Spring is the best time to enjoy the preserved Salem gardens of Lord & Schryver: Gaiety Hollow and Deepwood Estate. \nOpen Garden at Gaiety Hollow\, 545 Mission St. S.E. in Salem\, Oregon\, is now open Wednesdays from 10 a.m.–4 p.m. \nThe Deepwood Garden\, 849 12th St. S.E.\, is open daily from sunrise to sunset\, however a docent will be there to answer questions on Thursdays from noon–4 p.m. \nTo learn more about the rich history and garden design principles of Lord & Schryver\, a private tour of Gaiety Hollow with a trained docent is available. Groups of up to 20 people can be accommodated and tours run now through October. Guests start with an indoor slide presentation about Lord & Schryver and then go outside for the garden tour. DESCRIPTION:Clackamas County Master Gardeners will help grow your green thumb through their free Lecture Series\, presented on the second Monday of the month from 7–8 p.m. at the Milwaukie Center\, 5440 S.E. Kellogg Creek Drive in Milwaukie\, Oregon. \nMay 11: Microbiomes on Fresh vs. Store Bought Fruits and Vegetables presented by Gwynne Mhuireach (approved for one hour of continuing education credit). Mhuireach will share her research regarding microbiomes of garden-fresh versus store-bought fruits and vegetables\, as well as their potential impact on the gut microbiome after consumption. \nJune 8: Bees and Pollination\, presented by Dewey Caron (approved for one hour of continuing education credit). Pollinators are in peril\, like many insect populations. What might we do to improve pollinator health? The needs are similar for all living organisms: food resources\, protection from harmful chemicals\, a place to nest and the opposite sex to ensure the next generation. The group will discuss pollinators who we might want to attract and develop a strategy for meeting their basic needs\, one garden at a time. \nOctober 12: Hot Topics in Vegetable Gardening presented by Chip Bubl (approved for one hour of continuing education credit). \nNovember 9: Microplastics in Garden Soil presented by Anna Perry (approved for one hour of continuing education credit). What are microplastics\, and how might they impact my garden? Microplastics are ubiquitous in the environment\, yet very little is known about their impact on garden soils or garden ecology. This talk will provide an overview of what we know about plastics in soils: where they come from\, and how they might affect soils\, plants\, and other life within the soil. \nDecember 14: Greens and Gather: A Holiday Workshop. Join in for a cozy holiday workshop where Master Gardeners turn winter greens into beautiful\, handmade wreaths\, sharing creativity\, laughter and seasonal cheer.

SUMMARY:Paper sculptures add dimension to Portland Japanese Garden
DESCRIPTION:“Woven Light” Washi Sculptures by Yuri Kinoshita bathe the Portland Japanese Garden’s Calvin and Mayho Tanabe Gallery in a glowing world of light through September 14. \nSeattle-based artist Kinoshita creates serene landscapes of light through her traditional Japanese sculptural lamps called washi. The lamps are handmade with handmade paper from plant fibers\, and convey a special sense of place that mirrors the Pacific Northwest. \nWashi has been made in Japan for centuries. It is used for decoration as well as for religious rites and ceremonies. The paper for Kinoshita’s washi is sourced from artisans in Echizen in Fukui Prefecture\, Japan\, a region known for its long tradition of papermaking. The texture and shape of the paper is transformed depending on the type of washi used: the rough weave of bamboo fiber contrast with the soft\, fine glow of kozo\, which is washi created using mulberry bark. \nKinoshita’s light-filled sculptures are paired with bases that often are formed from richly colored walnut wood of the Pacific Northwest\, crafted by master woodworker Craig Yamamoto\, nephew to iconic woodworker George Nakashima. \nBorn in Kyoto to a third-generation kimono-making family\, Kinoshita’s art and design practice led her to study and practice throughout Europe and Asia\, before relocating her studio to Seattle in 2008. There\, she was immediately captivated by the quality of light iconic to the Pacific Northwest\, where the skies alternate between rolling cloud cover and sudden sunbursts. Her exquisitely woven washi lamps seek to bring this quality of light from the skies into interior spaces\, offering not just a functional source of light but a sense of warmth\, safety\, and tranquility. \nDetails: “Woven Light\,” 10 a.m.–5:30 p.m. daily through September 14. DESCRIPTION:Run\, walk or crawl…or do them all!! Fight for your Life 5K was created in remembrance of Emily Pohlschneider-Edwards. The race at 10:30 a.m. on September 27 is hosted at Emily’s family farm\, French Prairie Gardens\, where she grew up and helped work the fields. \nThis flat course will be located on dirt roads winding through the farmland. It is a family-friendly event. \nReceive SkyFest Kite Festival admission for yourself\, along with your race registration to attend all of the family fun activities and visit the Farm Bar and Brew. All race proceeds will go towards the Em’s Fight Foundation to help local women fighting cancer. \nAdvance registration is $33 and day-of registration is $35 per person and includes race T-shirt\, race packet\, one drink ticket for brew or hard cider (Must be 21+ for beer) or non-alcoholic beverages\, and receive SkyFest Kite Admission for the race attendee. \nPlease note that dogs will not be allowed at the race or on the property due to new insurance requirements. \nEm’s Fight foundation\, a 501 (c)(3) non profit organization\, was formed by the Pohlschneider Family in Emily Pohlschneider-Edwards memory in 2012 after Emily’s passing in October of 2011. Since the foundation was formed\, it has helped more 23 families with their cancer fight in the local community.
