SUMMARY:U.K. expert to speak on all-season gardening
DESCRIPTION:Internationally acclaimed gardener Fergus Garrett\, from the United Kingdom\, will give an in-person presentation on succession gardening — which means adding multilayered\, multi-season interest to your garden — Monday\, March 10 in Portland. \nThe ticketed event\, hosted by the Hardy Plant Society of Oregon (HPSO)\, will take place starting at 5 p.m. in the Roosevelt High School auditorium\, 6941 N. Central St.\, Portland. \nThe event is in-person only and won’t be recorded. Admission is $25 for HPSO members and $35 for non-members. Members may buy an additional ticket at the member price for one guest. Register online (login required). There’s also a link there to join HPSO\, if you choose. \nGarrett has served as head gardener and chief executive for Great Dixter Garden in Northiam\, East Sussex\, U.K. since 1993. He learned from charismatic gardener and writer Christopher Lloyd (1921–2006) how to keep the gardens of Great Dixter constantly changing throughout the seasons. He learned to be adventurous in trying out new plants and plant combinations. \n“Come and hear Fergus speak about long season gardening\,” HPSO stated in a release. “He’ll get you thinking about plant selection\, shape\, texture\, underplanting and interplanting with bulbs and other plants that are happy to share the same space\, as well as the use of self sowers and temporary fillers to prolong the seasons.” \n“Learn how to use bulbs and woodland plants to provide another layer in perennial and mixed borders. From snowdrops through to alliums\, these play a vital role in filling the gaps and giving you color for many months.”

SUMMARY:Introduction to Residential Honey Beekeeping
DESCRIPTION:Learn the basics of residential honey beekeeping. Why do people become beekeepers. What you need to consider and the differences between beekeeping in a rural vs urban setting. Also\, hear a bit about the financial responsibility to get started. What equipment and tools you need. Hive terminology and where is the ideal spot to place a hive. Instructors. The different types of bees\, workers\, drones and queen and what their responsibilities are in the hive. \nInstructor Bruce Janes volunteers in a commercial apiary\, and is a member of three bee clubs. Bruce is excited to teach this class because his philosophy is that the first step to becoming a successful beekeeper is to learn as much as you can about the bees themselves. Competent honey beekeepers requires hands-on training and mentorship. Before purchasing honey bees or equipment\, new beekeepers should seek as much training as they can. \nCo-instructor\, Jim Buck will talk about Flow Hives. The Flow Hive was developed in Australia by father-son entrepreneurs\, Stuart and Cedar Anderson\, who have sold thousands of them all over the world. They have designed a honey super with plastic comb and levers which allows the honey to flow out of comb with the turn of the levers. This ingenious design circumvents the need to remove frames and extract honey through centrifuges. Jim has used the flow hive successfully for three years and enjoying sharing my experience and tips with others. \nFind more information and register \nView the Community Events Flyer
